North Side Construction Causes Slowdowns

The most significant construction lane closures on Madison’s north side will end Friday, easing traffic delays, a state project manager said.

A second lane in each direction will reopen along Northport Drive/Packers Avenue about 7 p.m. Paving work had reduced to roads to one lane between Aberg Avenue and Troy Drive since Wednesday, said Brandon Lamers, the state Department of Transportation’s project engineer.

“This was probably the most difficult stretch for drivers (of the project’s eight-month timeline),” Lamers said.” The lane closures were necessary to complete the final layer of asphalt on the road,” he said.

The construction work will replace the pavement, signals and utilities, plus make safety improvements along the stretch of road. Crews will add a bicycle lane along the east side of Packers between Schlimgen Avenue and Darwin Road, a state Department of Transportation spokesman said earlier.

The project is scheduled to end Dec. 1
