MADISON, Wis. A boat is considered a total loss after a fire on Lake Monona Monday night.

According to the Dane County Sheriff’s office, the fire happened just before 11:30 p.m. near the shore along the 100 block of East Wilson.

Someone called 911 saying they saw a boat on fire and heard people screaming.

According to a release from the sheriff’s department, the 17 foot 1976 Sundance boat died in the water and eventually caught fire.

The boat’s owner tired to put the fire out with an extinguisher onboard but the fire continued to grow.

The three people onboard had to jump off the boat and swim to shore.
