TOWN OF POYNETTE, Wis. — The Poynette Police Department and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department are investigating a situation where a man shot out the door of his home at officers and the residential area.
Police said officers responded to a call for a suicidal man on the 300 block of North Lincoln Street in Poynette at 6:09 p.m. Monday.
The suspect, Michael Morgan, 40, exited his home several times with a weapon and fired at officers several times. We do know one squad car was hit by a bullet. We do not know if any homes were hit. We also do not know how many rounds were fired.
Officers returned fire and Morgan went back into his home. He later exited his home again without a weapon. Officers say he was stunned with a Taser and arrested.
There is no threat to the community. Other family members were in the home at the time but no one was hurt.
Officers say Michael Morgan is expected to be charged with attempted homicide.
The investigation is ongoing. It will be a joint effort between the Poynette Police Department and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Department. The sheriff’s department will investigate the officer-involved shooting while the police department will investigate the attempted homicide.
