Youngest student at UW Madison, at 13 years old, to host STEM camp next week

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. - Sarah Gay, 13, has been taking college courses at the UW College Online since she was 9 years old.

"I've always been really interested in learning," she said.

Gay is majoring in astrophysics and says," It's just fascinating how the world works."

Being the youngest student at UW College Online is just one part of her impressive resume. She is the leader of her Girl Scout troop, a dancer, plays violin and piano, reviews toys for various STEM companies, is a public speaker, works on projects with Discovery World in Milwaukee and is a published author of several children's books.

Gay's mother, Dannelle Gay, says it's a challenge trying to find new learning opportunities that will challenge her daughter.

"I don't think any parent expects to have a child in kindergarten who can read Moby Dick and understand it. Or by third grade, testing out of things at high school levels," Dannelle Gay said.

Gay still takes courses at her own middle school level so she can have a "semi-normal life", but Dannelle Gay said some courses just aren't up to her daughter's speed.

"It's just been finding and making the right connections to make the opportunities happen," Dannelle Gay said.

Gay is challenging herself once again by hosting a camp for science, technology, engineering and mathematics learning next week.

"I don't want to give everything away, but we have movie studies, studies on various historical people," Gay said.
