MADISON, Wis. - After the Democratic National Committee announced that they chose Milwaukee for the 2020 Democratic National Convention, hotels began the legwork on what they anticipate will be a hectic week.
Visit Milwaukee asked Destination Madison to reach out to hotels to place bids to host during the DNC.
Radisson Hotel on Grand Canyon Drive is one of select few that will be hosting.
"We put our best foot forward and say this is what we would like to offer to the DNC and how we would like to have them stay with us. They choose a select number of hotels and we are on that list," said sales manager Alora Newberry.
Newberry said the hotels on the list offer flat rates for those staying during the week of the DNC. Newberry said the rates they're offering are $150- $179, depending on the room. They also offer benefits to hotel guests during that time.
According to hotels.com, Madison hotels are already 95 percent booked during that week. Hotels are expecting to block out rooms for at least two weeks surrounding the DNC.
Many are expecting the economic impact will be similar to when Minneapolis hosted the Super Bowl, and hotel inventory was sold out a year in advance.
Even with a spike in demand for hotel rooms, Airbnb is also expecting a huge influx of guests.
Airbnb spokesperson Ben Breit said in a statement:
"We have seen time and time again how local hosts and homeowners can help cities expand lodging capacity and take full economic advantage of big events. We look forward to partnering with our Milwaukee host community and local stakeholders to ensure the convention provides a lasting economic impact for the region."
While Breit wasn't able to anticipate how many guests he expects, he guessed it may be similar to previous DNC conventions held in other cities. In 2016, Philadelphia hosts earned a combined $2.4 million during the DNC. In 2018, Milwaukee County hosts earned $7.1 million hosting 71,000 guests.
On top of the DNC bringing in thousands of people, there are two other conventions happening around the same time as the DNC. Destination Madison's president and CEO Deb Archer said the American Animal Lab Science and Uniform Law Commission have small conventions in Madison that they've had booked for a while.
Although hotels have a lot of planning to do until then, Archer said, "We are willing and able to help Milwaukee in any way possible to help the state make sure this comes off beautifully."
