MADISON, Wis. - Madison Area Technical College partnered with a local nonprofit to deliver fresh produce, benefiting both farms and schools.
REAP (which is short for Research, Education, Action and Policy) Food Group launched a pilot program that brings locally grown produce to Madison students and area hospital patients.
Through this program, Madison College is providing a place for the produce to be washed, cut and packaged for delivery to the Madison Metropolitan School District, University of Wisconsin Dining and UW Health.
The program also helps out local farmers.
"By enabling institutional food service to buy from local farms, we invest food dollars locally and support local farms, many of which are struggling to keep their doors open amidst another farm crisis in our state," said Helen Sarakinos, executive director of REAP.
The program will serve 12 schools in the Madison Metropolitan School District.
