Postal employee asks breastfeeding mom to leave, USPS apologizes

Janesville postal employee asks nursing mom to leave, USPS apologizes

JANESVILLE, Wis. - A post office official has apologized after a Janesville woman was asked to leave a postal building two days in a row because she was breastfeeding her baby.

Raven Dibble was nursing her 3-week-old daughter Harlow while mailing packages at the post office on Milton Avenue, she said in a post on social media. Dibble said on Wednesday and Thursday she was asked to cover up or leave while breastfeeding in the office, and Dibble claims a postal worker called her nursing in public "indecent."

"I'm not standing up for my own right to breast feed my child. I'm standing up for other women to breast feed their child. I'm standing up for those children, my daughter, her right to eat," Dibble said.

A spokesman for the United States Postal Service, Sean Hargadon, said in a statement to News 3 that the agency has said it was sorry for the incident last week.

"We have apologized to the customer for the incident and any inconvenience this may have caused her," Hargadon wrote. "We have talked to our employees about the situation and have taken this opportunity to educate our employees regarding the law."

Wisconsin state statute 253.165 says a "mother may breast-feed her child in any public or private location where the mother and child are otherwise authorized to be.

"In such a location, no person may prohibit a mother from breast-feeding her child, direct a mother to move to a different location to breast-feed her child, direct a mother to cover her child or breast while breast-feeding, or otherwise restrict a mother from breast-feeding her child as provided in this section."

Dibble is planning a nurse-in event at the Janesville post office Wednesday in response to the incident, according to her Facebook group. On Thursday afternoon, the event showed 93 people planned to attend.
