Burglary investigation leads to shootout, large house fire near Fort Atkinson

Officials were sent to the area of County Highway A and Highway 106 in the town of Sumner for a possible burglary. Once a sheriff’s deputy got to the scene, they said a person shot at the deputy from inside the home. The deputy shot back and took cover before noticing black smoke coming from the home.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said it is still an active scene and asks people to avoid the area. The Wisconsin Department of Justice and State Fire Marshal are leading the investigation.

The Sheriff’s Department would not say if anyone was arrested in connection to this incident.
