Madison school district announces interim superintendent

MADISON, Wis. - Leaders in the Madison Metropolitan School District have announced an interim replacement for departing Superintendent Jen Cheatham.

MMSD spokeswoman Rachel Strauch-Nelson said Friday that district board members selected Dr. Jane Belmore as interim superintendent for the 2019-20 school year.

Cheatham announced in early May that she was leaving the position at the end of August and taking a job on the faculty at the Harvard Graduate School of Education in the fall.

"Dr. Belmore is widely respected in education and brings extensive experience in our district," Board President Gloria Reyes said in a release. "As a board, we are unified in our commitment to our district's vision, goals and core values - and the work outlined in our Strategic Framework. We are excited to have Jane lead that work forward, and we are eager to engage with our community through the next school year to select a permanent superintendent."

A former teacher, principal and assistant superintendent in MMSD, Belmore brings more than 20 years of experience in Madison schools, the release said.

She served as interim superintendent during the 2012-13 school year and has worked in Madison consulting on issues involving education, early childhood and family development. She received her doctorate in educational administration from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has also served as a professor and dean of the School of Education at Edgewood College.

"I am honored to be selected for this role, and I am energized to support the district’s staff, students and families this school year," Belmore said.

Belmore's contract will be finalized at Monday's board meeting, Strauch-Nelson said. She and Cheatham will work together through the summer to ensure a smooth transition and strong start to the school year.
