The women’s college basketball Sweet 16 features a new format and a bit of history when it begins later this week. The NCAA changed its setup this season, going away from the traditional four sites to two. Greenville, South Carolina, and Seattle will each host eight teams before sending the winners on to Dallas for the Final Four. This weekend will also feature the second time since the tournament expanded to 64 teams that two of the No. 1 seeds didn’t reach the regional semifinals after Stanford and Indiana were knocked out. JANESVILLE, Wis. — The School District of Janesville says it was hit with a ransomware attack over the weekend, locking students, staff and parents out of several web-based systems and programs.
In a Facebook post Monday, the district said their IT team noticed irregularities in the district’s network, and an investigation found code in the servers that appeared to be ransomware.
The district’s IT team contacted the State of Wisconsin’s Division of Enterprise Technology Cyber Response Team and the FBI and US Department of Homeland Security.
District officials say no data has been accessed or destroyed, but the cyber attack has locked the School District of Janesville servers, meaning everyone is currently locked out of systems and programs like Infinite Campus, Classlink, and web-based textbooks and resources. Google Classroom and GMail are still accessible as long as the user is not connected to SDJ WiFi sources.
School phones, security cameras, and paging systems have not been affected.
Officials say they have not received a “ransom note” indicating demands to unlock the servers at this point. The district’s IT team is continuing to work to address the situation with the support of the state Cyber Response Team.
