BELOIT, Wis. - The Beloit Police Department is investigating a fight that happened after school near Beloit Memorial High School and was recorded on camera.
Police said the fight on Thursday started between two boys and then others jumped in to gang up on one victim. The fight happened near Shore Drive and Beach Avenue, which is about a half-mile away from the high school.
“During this fight, the victim was knocked down and then two to three other suspects began to kick, beat and stomped on the victim as he laid on the ground,” Lt. John Kaltenbrun, with the Beloit Police Department, said.
He said the victim had cuts, bruises and a bloody nose.
The video, which was posted to Facebook on Monday, shows several other students standing by and watching as their classmates beat each other up.
“It doesn’t pose helpful when people, instead of summoning help, rather either encourage the behavior that’s going on or do nothing to prevent it, basically become spectators in what should not be a spectator sport,” Kaltenbrun said.
Community leaders agree that the witnesses should have done more.
“There’s no way to excuse the behavior, doesn’t belong any place, any time, and people that witness these things should step forward and let people know what’s happening,” CouncilmanMark Preuschl said. “Witnesses need to take action. They need to stop being sheep and be a witness and get out there and let people know what’s going on because we won’t stop this until the people that know these people start putting their foot down and saying, ‘I’ve had enough, and we’re not going to let this happen anymore.’”
Kaltenbrun said police arrested three of the suspects on Thursday and were looking for the fourth. The three boys are facing battery charges, and one of the boys is also facing a theft charge after police said he took the victim’s backpack. The backpack was recovered, and police are still investigating why the fight started. Police said the boys involved were all between the ages of 14 and 16.
