Armed robbery in Portage leads to car chase, crash in Madison

PORTAGE, Wis. - An armed robbery in Portage led to a car chase and eventual crash in Madison on Friday night.

According to a press release from the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, an employee of Summit Credit Union on the 100 block of Henry Drive in Portage called 911 to report that the bank was robbed at gunpoint shortly before 6 p.m.

Officials said they found out the suspect concealed his identity and showed a firearm as he walked into the bank. He ordered employees to lay on the floor and put physical restraints on them. The robber ran away with an unknown amount of cash and drove off in a light-colored car with dealer license plates.

Portage Police Department and Columbia County Sheriff's Office authorities attempted to find the man. A deputy later saw the man's vehicle going eastbound on Interstate 39-90-94.

The release said law enforcement tried to initiate a traffic stop near the Columbia and Dane County border, but the man drove at speeds of over 100 mph in an attempt to escape officials.

The man continued driving until he left the interstate and onto East Washington Avenue in Madison. He eventually crashed into a FedEx truck at the intersection of East Washington Avenue and Stoughton Road on State Highway 51. Madison police was immediately on scene and took the man into custody.

Authorities identified the man as Jeffrey J. Parker, 40, of Madison.

Parker is now at the Columbia County Jail and awaits an initial appearance in Columbia County Circuit Court.

Madison police is investigating the crash.
