New Jersey sells only winning ticket in Friday Mega Millions drawing

A lucky person in New Jersey has won the $521 million Mega Millions jackpot, the fourth largest in the game’s history and 10th largest in U.S. lottery history.

The identity of the winner isn’t known, but he or she has one year to claim the prize.

A news release on the Mega Millions website said “Congratulations to the winner of this multi-million dollar jackpot! We encourage the winner to sign the back of the ticket, make a copy of both sides and put it in a safe place.”

Friday’s winning numbers were 11, 28, 31, 46, 59 and Mega Ball 1. The Megaplier was 3.

The winning ticket was sold at a Lukoil gas station in Riverdale, N.J. which is about 30 miles west of New York City.

A man told ABC News he won $200 thousand dollars at the same station a few years ago. He wished the jackpot winner luck and also offered some advice.

“Save it, invest it,” Pat Matano told ABC News.

Matano said he buys his lottery tickets only at the Lukoil store. He said he won big in December 2014. Of the $200 thousand prize he won, he said he received about $154 thousand after taxes.

Strong sales pushed Friday’s jackpot to an estimated $521 million ($317 million cash). It was the largest since a $536 million prize was won in Indiana on July 8, 2016.

Six years ago, on March 30, 2012, the largest Mega Millions jackpot in history was won, a $656 million prize shared by winners in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland.

The jackpot for next Tuesday’s drawing resets to $40 million.
