New food cart Pudgey’s creates new sandwich experience
Cart feeds Madisonians after live events
Owner Jamie Scholl says he has little desire to be a food cart competing for space on the Capitol Square. Rather, he wants Pudgey’s, a new Madison food cart, to fill a gap for quick, hot food at live entertainment venues.
As a music enthusiast, Scholl listens to anything apart from screamo or heavy metal bands and attends as many concerts, theater performances, sporting events and live shows as he can. A couple years ago, while leaving a live music concert in Chicago, he saw several food vendors parked outside the show and thought, Madison needs this.
“Here in Madison, with the number of microbreweries, bars and taverns that don’t serve food, it felt like there was a great market here,” said Scholl.
The name of the food cart comes from the famous “pudgy pies” that families eat while camping. Typically two slices of buttered bread are pressed between two cast-iron skillets and held over a campfire. Any ingredient can be put between the bread to create mouthwatering creations.
Although Pudgey’s doesn’t use a roaring fire to create the sandwiches, Scholl says he is trying to bring that experience to the guests.
The cart itself has rustic wood tones and exudes a “cabin in the woods” feel. The ingredients for the hot sandwiches range from sweet options like “Want S’more” with peanut butter, chocolate chips and marshmallows or a spin on a classic grilled cheese with gluten free bread, vegan cheese or spicy jalapeño poppers.

While pudgy pies will be a staple on the menu, customers can expect shakes, smoothies and pudgey bites that will change based on event. When Pudgey’s hosted an Easter Egg Hunt at Capital Brewery, the pudgy pies reflected things kids would enjoy like pizza and warm PB&J sandwiches.
Scholl plans to partner with places like State Line Distillery, Capital Brewery and Hops Haus Brewing Company in Verona to provide guests with a quick meal after events.
