Neil was born on October 6, 1931 in Sparta. The son of Hugh F. and Eda B. (Nichols) Martin. He was united in marriage to Betty Sass on June 28, 1952 in Waukon, Iowa. They were married almost 57 years. She preceded him in death on June 13, 2009. Neil worked at John Deere in Dubuque for 30 years. While Neil worked full-time, he farmed. Neil taught his kids how to farm and trusted them to manage the farm. After his sons grew up and moved out, Neil raised pigs for many years. He loved to spend time outdoors riding his four wheeler, reading books, talking with dear friends and neighbors, and spending time with his family. Neil was able to stay at home with care provided by his son, Bob, until his most recent set back. Neil was very proud of his large family and loved being a Grandpa to his many grandkids and great-grandkids.

He is survived by his seven children, Michael (Gayle) of Dickeyville; Ron (Linda) of Cuba City; Bob of Platteville; Dale (Lynn) of Hazel Green; Steve (Teri) of Evansville; Donna (Jeff) Martens of Merrimac; Kay (Mike) Kalvin of Cross Plains; eighteen grandchildren, Nathan, Keslee, Jodi (Matt), Kelli, Stephany, Shannon (Andrew), Adam (Ashley), Blake, Jordan, Chad, Cori (Matt), Tanya, Chris, Megan, Kenda, Ben, Derek, and Lauren; eight great-grandchildren, Dylan, Abigail, Chase, Natalie, JaVo’nte, Keyo’nDre, Rowan, and Zander; brother, Stanton Martin; sisters, Jackie Hoffman and Larraine Van Fleet. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his parents; his father and mother-in-law; son, Keith; brothers, John and Merwyn; and sisters, Winifred, Mildred, Ardell, Loretta, and Janie.

“God Blessed us with a wonderful Dad, Grandfather, and Great-Grandfather. We know you and mom are together now and you are at peace.” A special thank you to Dr. Jeff White and the staff at Southwest Health Center who lovingly cared for dad and mom for many years. We would also like to thank the caring staff at Manor Care where dad spent the last month.
