A group of neighbors in the area where a man was shot and killed by a police officer are holding a front porch vigil Tuesday night.

A release from Madison District 6 Ald. Marsha Rummel states the Marquette neighborhood is calling for a show of support for Paul Heenan by lighting a candle on your front porch or in your window.

“Our community is heartbroken over the tragic death of Paulie,” said Rummel. “We hope this tribute will be a first step to healing in our neighborhood.”

Heenan was shot by police officer Stephen Heimsness Friday while Heimsness was responding to a 911 call about a possible burglary in the 500 block of South Baldwin Street.

Heenan had just moved to the neighborhood and entered the wrong house, according to police.

Madison Police Chief Noble Wray said Heenan wasn’t armed at the time but that Heimsness believed his life was in danger during the struggle and fired three rounds, killing Heenan.

Visitation and services for Heenan are Tuesday evening.
