Neighbors report person entering unlocked vehicles in early morning hours; man arrested

Police arrested a Madison man early Tuesday morning after receiving reports of a man opening unlocked car doors on the east side, according to a news release.

Madison police said concerned neighbors saw a person at about 4:30 a.m. going into vehicles in the area of North Sixth Street and along East Mifflin Street.

Officers eventually found the suspect, 31-year-old Steven M. Willems, who was carrying a black athletic bag.

Police said Willems admitted to entering unlocked vehicles. He was arrested on suspicion of theft and on a probation violation. Officers are working on returning stolen items to their owners.
