NCAA: No. 13 UC Irvine upsets No. 4 Kansas State

The 13th-seeded UC Irvine Anteaters pulled off a big upset Friday, knocking off No. 4 Kansas State 70-64 in first-round South Region play in San Jose, California.

The win makes it 17 straight for UC Irvine, which last lost to Long Beach State in mid-January. That run includes both the Big West regular-season and tournament titles.

The Anteaters (31-5) have already surpassed their previous best performance in the tournament, having narrowly lost to Louisville 57-55 in their only other appearance in 2015.

UC Irvine’s second-round opponent will be the winner of Friday afternoon’s matchup between No. 5 Wisconsin and No. 12 Oregon.

The Wildcats, meanwhile, will head home, falling well short of repeating their Elite Eight berth from last year.

The Big 12 regular-season co-champions finish with an overall record of 25-9, losing their last two games, including a loss to Iowa State in the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament.
