NCAA: Florida State pushes past Vermont

The No. 4 Florida State Seminoles beat the No. 13 Vermont Catamounts 76-69 in a first round matchup in the West Region Thursday.

Vermont plays in the America East, the same conference that gave the 2018 tournament goliath killers UMBC, the first No. 16 seed to be a No. 1 seed in tournament history.

The Catamounts are 2-7 all-time in the tournament, with their most recent win coming in the 2012 First Four. However, their other win is more notable, coming as a No. 13 seed against No. 4 Syracuse in 2005.

Mfiondu Kabengele led the Seminoles with 21 points and Anthony Lamb led the Catamounts with 16 points.

Florida State reached the Elite Eight last season and are playing in the tournament for the seventh time over the past 11 seasons.

The winner will face the winner of Thursday afternoon’s game between No. 5 Marquette and No. 12 Murray State.
