She was born in Richland Center on July 11, 1932 to Milford and Dorothy Knause. In later years, Nancy shared many fond memories of her childhood, growing up with her parents and one sister, who together as a family sang songs, played games, and maintained an active church and social life.

in high school, she met her one true love, F. Paul Fowell. They were together from the age of 15 years, until his death in 1990. They graduated from high school together, and attended college together at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. They married upon graduation in 1954. After that, Nancy taught high school to assist Paul in completing his Law Degree at U W Madison.

They raised their three children together, always emphasizing the value of a good education, and always offering new opportunities to them. Later in life, Nancy completed her Ph.D. at U W Madison. Nancy become a full professor at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, and taught there for 15 years, until her retirement in 1998. She was loved by her students who, several times, honored her as a favorite teacher. She published numerous articles and assisted in starting quality preschools throughout the state of Wisconsin.

During her lifetime she volunteered her talents many times, teaching Sunday school, acting as a Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout den mother, teaching low income mothers how to prepare cost efficient meals and sew clothing, and helping committed parents to set up quality preschools. Nancy was always a dedicated teacher, taking pride in all of her students’ accomplishments, from the preschool level to the college level. She took an interest in the personal lives of those around her, and was always ready to lend a supportive ear to anyone facing a challenge in life. For all around her, she consistently modeled the all-important principals of acceptance and forgiveness.

She is survived by her children: Karen Fowell (spouse, James Lane); Matthew Lawrence (spouse, Chris Brandon); Sarah Fowell (Paul Delys); and foster daughter, Elizabeth Pankow (spouse, Roger Pankow).
