Mural dedicated at new apartment complex at site of former Ella’s Deli

MADISON, Wis. — A new public art project was dedicated at a new apartment building on Madison’s east side Tuesday afternoon.

The nearly 3,400-square-foot, multi-story mural on the side of the Ella Apartments housing development on the former site of Ella’s Deli was painted by Madison native Bill Rebholz.

“It’s not only a mural for the building, it’s for the community and the environment,” Ald. Syed Abbas said, “and people stop and look, so I appreciate the vision and the local artists.”

The $30 million complex the mural was painted on includes 135 affordable apartments and commercial space. It was developed by New Year Investments, a Madison-based and woman-owned developer, and offers housing targeting people who make 30%, 50% and 80% of Dane County’s median income.

The deli, which opened on State Street in 1963 before moving to East Washington Avenue in 1976, closed in 2018. Epic Systems later bought the deli’s iconic carousel and decoration collection.
