Madison police said a report of person with a gun at Frank Allis Elementary School Tuesday afternoon was most likely a prank.

Officials said a staff member of an after-school program heard someone say there was a gun in the school. The staff member reportedly heard, “This kid has a gun,” over a handheld radio, police said.

There were about 15 adults and students in the school at the time of the incident, according to a release.

Crews were sent to the elementary school on Buckeye Road around 5:20 p.m. Police cleared the building just before 6:30 p.m.

“If it seems like overkill sometimes where we have way more resources than necessary, I don’t see that as a bad thing,” MPD Sgt. Bernie Gonzalez said. “Because we are dealing with the most vulnerable and precious people in our community, our children.”
