Motorcyclist strikes deer, dies from crash injuries
Speed not a factor in collision, officials say
ARLINGTON, Wis. — A Madison man on a motorcycle struck a deer Tuesday afternoon and later died of the injuries he suffered in the crash, officials said.
The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a report of a motorcycle crash on County K at 3:54 p.m. in the town of Arlington, about five miles north of DeForest.
Phillip J. Johnson, 61, was headed east on County K about a quarter mile east of Pine Hollow Road when he collided with a deer, according to the report.
Johnson suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to UW Hospital in Madison via Med Flight, but was pronounced dead later that night at the hospital.
Sheriff Dennis Richards said Johnson was not wearing a helmet when emergency responders arrived at the scene. A helmet was found but the sheriff said it wasn’t clear if Johnson was wearing it at the time of the crash. Speed was not a factor in the crash.
