Motions into music: Composer-in-residence’s symphony to make world premiere at Overture Center

MADISON, Wis. — Last year, renowned composer Dr. Bill Banfield began a three-year term as the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra’s composer-in-residence.

On Friday, he will be doing something never done before: the world premiere of his Symphony Number 8 titled “Here I Stand” at the Overture Center.

Banfield said the piece was inspired by Paul Robeson, the musician, performer and activist.

“I was very moved by the words of Paul Robeson and his life, here I stand. How do we make a stand in life and work with our convictions and we stand out as artists?” he said.
