Mood acrimonious as Vikings stadium talks continue

Vikings keep it close, then get blown out

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton is toning down criticism of a new, last-minute GOP Vikings stadium alternative after Republicans agreed the new facility should have a roof.

The Democratic governor called the proposal “a hare-brained scheme” Wednesday morning. But after meeting with GOP leaders in the afternoon, he said he’s willing to hear them out. But Dayton said he still prefers a vote on the negotiated $975 million stadium plan.

Top Republicans haven’t filled in key details of their new proposal. They’re floating a smaller state subsidy funded by general state bonds, instead of tax revenue from a gambling expansion.

Republicans unveiled details of the new proposal Tuesday, a day after lawmakers had hoped to adjourn their session for the year. They say the original plan lacked support to pass.
