Monroe returns to state girls basketball
Last year's experience could help
MONROE — The Monroe Cheesemakers are headed back to the WIAA State Girls Basketball Tournament at the Resch Center in Green Bay for the second straight year.
The Cheesemakers will play New Berlin Eisenhower in the Division Two semifinals Friday at 3:15 pm.
Last year, Beaver Dam defeated Monroe in the semifinals. The Golden Beavers then went on to win the state championship.
This year, Beaver Dam plays Hortonville in the semifinals at 1:35 Friday. If the Golden Beavers and Cheesemakers both win their semifinals, they’d play for the state championship Friday.
Monroe hopes last year’s experience at state will serve them well this year.
“When it’s the first time for the kids, it’s all of a sudden, what’s new, what’s next , what’s going to come,” head coach Sam Mathiason said. “Now all of a sudden they all have a little bit so I think in some regards, they’re going to enjoy it a little more because it’s not going to be all that completely surprise.”
Junior guard Sydney Hilliard added “we have a freshman – she’s going to be nervous and I think the newbies coming on varsity this year are also going to be nervous , but I think we’re prepared for the big lights, big crowd and I think we’ll be ready.”
“You talk about this opportunity doesn’t come around often,” Mathiason said. “How do you make the most of it and how do you enjoy it?”
