Mineral Point advances to WIAA softball championship
Will play Kenosha St. Joseph's for title
MADISON, Wis. — The Mineral Point girls softball team will play Kenosha St. Joseph’s for the WIAA Division Three State Championship after the Pointers defeated Stevens Point Pacelli, 2-1 in the semifinals Friday afternoon at Goodman Diamond.
Beth Wood struck out five and allowed only one unearned run to lead the Pointers to their first ever win at the state girls softball tournament. Mineral Point’s only other trip to state was 30 years ago.
Mineral Point took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Kaitlyn Qualley’s sacrifice fly.
Emily Wood drove in another run in the sixth with a groundout to make it a 2-0 lead for the Pointers.
Pacelli scored a run in the top of the seventh and had runners on first and second with two out, but Sydney Pethel made a running catch in right field to end the game and send the Pointers to the championship game.
Mineral Point (22-3) will face Kenosha St. Joseph’s (25-1) for the Division Three state championship Saturday afternoon at 12:30.WIAA Div. 3 softball: Mineral Point vs. Stevens Point Pacelli
