The Milwaukee County sheriff paid a parking ticket after he parked in a spot reserved for disabled drivers at a war memorial on Veterans Day.

Sheriff David Clarke said in a statement he pulled up in front of the Milwaukee County War Memorial Nov. 11 and asked a captain to move his vehicle to another spot. Clarke said when he returned, he found that his vehicle had not been moved.

Clarke said he ordered a county citation be written and paid the $35 fine. He said he also made a $200 personal donation “to an organization that works with the disabled.

“I would rather the money go to a private org working with the disabled than to government,” Clarke wrote.

Clarke also said the captain’s failure to follow an order to move the vehicle was “inexcusable” and ordered an internal investigation.
