Middleton captures Big 8 hockey title

Middleton boys’ hockey team beat Verona 4-1 Thursday night to win the Big 8 title outright for 2015-2016.

Verona could have captured a share of the title if they had won Thursday. The Wildcats started off strong. Zach Ritter fed Jack Anderson with a pass which led to the first score of the game and gave Verona a 1-0 lead.

But they didn’t keep the lead for long. 30 seconds later, Middleton’s Colin Butler sent a pass to Nolan Kiba, who slammed it home to tie the game.

Middleton’s Jake Livesey assisted on two power play goals for the Cardinals later in the game. He helped Butler get one goal, while providing an assist to Casey Harper in a 5 on 3 play.

Middleton, who is ranked sixth in the state, is 12-2 in Big 8 play, and 20-3 overall. With the loss, Verona goes to 10-4 in the Big 8, and 14-9-1 overall.
