Mid-Century cool at The Century House
The Century House features mid-century modern and sleek Scandinavian pieces for the home.

As a palate-refresher of a store, The Century House honors the mid-century modern and Scandinavian furnishings trend while offering a covetable assortment of home decor, dinnerware, children’s gifts, kitchenware and more. It specializes in modern Scandinavian items, yes, but also offers merchandise from Japan, the United States and Italy. Next door, The Century House furniture gallery features clean, crisp room setups with furniture from Norway, Denmark and Sweden.

Gift shop manager Kris Schoenbrunn thinks the store’s longevity is due to the university’s worldly audience: “People come here and see what they had at home. They like it, and they buy it.” Brands like Marimekko, Iittala, Oleana and Heath Ceramics rank among the most popular purchases, she adds.

Each room in the sprawling two-story shop is organized with a theme in mind–dinnerware in one room, stationery and cards in another, kitchenware upstairs. Poppy, whimsical patterns dominate in linens and wall hangings, while sleek ceramics, glassware and decorative items temper the exuberance nicely. Two children’s rooms are filled with wooden toys, Blabla yarn stuffed animals and adorable Marimekko onesies. It’s clear that the design and utility of an item are tantamount here–which is no surprise, given the Scandinavian theme running throughout.

“The design aspect is important,” says Schoenbrunn. “Is it going to be desirable over time? That’s why so many European brands are great–they’re quality, functional and still look great over time.”
