Michael Johnson says soon-to-be-closed Sam’s Club should be donated to Boys and Girls Club

The president and CEO of the Dane County Boys and Girls Club said he has a proposal for the soon-to-be-closed Sam’s Club on Madison’s West side.

Michael Johnson thinks the building and land should be gifted to the Boys and Girls Club, who would then transform it into an indoor sports complex that members of the community could use.

He showed News 3 renderings from similar projects across the country. He said the 10,000-square-foot building should also include a job-training center to prepare young people for local career opportunities.

“The average sports complex center is about 100,000-square-foot, we can put six or seven basketball courts, a tennis court, a volleyball court, an indoor football field, batting cage. There is not a facility like this in Dane County, and why not do it right here in Madison?” Johnson said.

Johnson said he would be willing to travel to the Walmart headquarters in Arkansas with a delegation of community, business and elected officials to make a case for such a partnership.

The Sam’s Club is set to close Jan. 26 .
