MFD responds to garage fire on Madison’s west side, firefighters say

MADISON, Wis. — The Madison Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Madison’s west side Sunday morning, according to a firefighter at the scene.

The homeowner, Donna Gray, said she and her husband were relaxing by the fireplace this morning when she started to smell smoke. After realizing it wasn’t coming from the fireplace, her husband searched the house but couldn’t find where it was coming from. Then he opened the garage door.

“All the sudden woosh! The smoke poured in like crazy,” Gray said. “He closed the door quickly and we called 911.”

Gray said dispatch operators told her to leave the house. She said multiple units arrived in practically seconds.

Medic 2 was first on the scene, according to MFD, and upon arriving confirmed that the fire’s location was inside the garage and extinguished it with their pre-connect line.

Investigators are still determining what caused the fire. The garage door, drywall and personal belongings were damaged in the fire — a total of around $20,000 in damages, according to MFD.

Gray said although she’s unsure what will happen next, they will be ok. She says she’s grateful to MFD for their help.
