A 15-year-old James Madison Memorial High School student was arrested Monday morning after she punched a 56-year-old teacher in the face, police said.

The teacher told police the student was being verbally abusive and disruptive, and after being told several times to quiet down and be respectful, a private security guard was called to escort the student out of the classroom, police said.

Before leaving, the student delivered a blow to the teacher’s head, police said.

The girl said she got violent because the teacher called her a name. She also told police the teacher can’t tell her what to do, and that she would hit the teacher again.

The student was taken to the Juvenile Reception Center, police said.

The teacher was not seriously injured, police said.

She told police she is concerned about the student’s escalating, profane and threatening behavior.
