Memorable Meals at Wonder Bar Steakhouse

veryone loves a place with a past—the more sensational the better—like Little Bohemia Lodge in Manitowish Waters where the Dillinger gang hung out. But many don’t know a venerable Madison restaurant has its own gangland roots, too. Eddie Toughy, a Chicago mobster, opened the here in 1929. It became a much beloved watering hole and eatery, changing ownership and names several times. Now the Wonder Bar is back and better than ever with a menu worthy of a stellar twenty-first-century steakhouse. Perfect martinis, aged beef, generous portions and signature crab bisque and hashbrowns are simply awesome.

: Seared Chilean sea bass brushed with banana curry glaze and topped with sweet potato strings (front). Back: Barbecued applewood smoked bacon-wrapped prawns with chef Shawn’s barbecue sauce. A perfect accompaniment to your meal? A “Marilyn” martini, shown.
