As arts editor of Madison Magazine, Katie Vaughn coordinates arts and entertainment coverage in print and online and writes the Milwaukee Press Club Award-winning Artscape blog. She appears every Thursday on WISC-TV’s Live at Four for the Weekend 608 segment of entertainment highlights. She also contributes travel features, service-journalism packages and other stories about interesting aspects of the city to the magazine’s multiple platforms.

Vaughn earned degrees in journalism and art history from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a master’s in journalism from Stanford University. She's a member of the Journalism and Women Symposium and serves on the board of Girls on the Run of South Central Wisconsin. An avid traveler, she never passes up an opportunity to experience a new place. She lives in the city with her husband, young daughter and son and a rowdy eight-pound dog.

Explain your job in one sentence.
I get to cover Madison’s exciting arts scene and help put together each issue of the magazine.

Where’d you grow up?
Just south of Madison in Oregon, Wisconsin.

What’s the first thing you do every day?
Pray. I like to start the day from a place of gratitude.

What’s your favorite pick-me-up?
Living-room dance parties with my kids.

What gadget could you never live without?
The camera and photo apps on my iPhone. I am constantly running out of storage because I take so many pictures.

What’s the most memorable trip you’ve taken?
I love to travel, but London, Istanbul, Rome and a safari in Kenya have been especially memorable trips.

What movie can you watch over and over?
Dirty Dancing

How would you spend an ideal day off?
Relaxing by a pool or, even better, an ocean.

Who’s been your greatest inspiration?
My parents. They taught me to work hard, ask questions and enjoy life.

What’s top on your bucket list?
I want to sit courtside at a professional basketball game.

What was your best subject in school?
English and art.

What’s the best reason to stay up late?
Laughing with my husband.

How do you unwind?
Nothing beats a good long run.

What song always boosts your mood?
Late ’90s/early 2000s R&B. It reminds me of fun times with my girlfriends.

What’s most needed to do your job?
Curiosity, patience and passion.
