McFarland teacher charged with 4 felonies

A fourth-grade McFarland school teacher, who is now on a leave of absence from his position amid a police investigation, made his initial appearance in court Thursday since being accused of sexually assaulting a child.

The criminal complaint naming Andrew Meeks, 35, said he inappropriately touched the student against his wishes, constantly talked about sex and taught the 12-year-old boy how to find pornography on his phone and hide it from the student’s mother.

At the court, prosecutors asked for an increase in bail, which was set at $500 for each of the four counts. Meeks almost fainted at one point during the hearing.

The court did not increase the bail per count, but it did agree that Meeks should surrender his passport to ensure he returns to court. Prosecutors said Meeks had previously lived abroad.

Meeks faces a sentence of more than 100 years if convicted.

His next court date is in mid-October.
