Matthew T. Miller

FITCHBURG-Matthew T. Miller, age 55, passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, after a courageous 2 ½ year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born May 2, 1957, in Davenport, Iowa to David L. Miller and Joan M. (Rochau) Miller.

Matt was raised in West Des Moines, Iowa and graduated from Dowling Catholic High School. He graduated from Grinnell College in Iowa in 1979 with a degree in both Economics and Psychology. He played basketball at Grinnell all four years, served as Captain of the team his senior year, and earned the nickname, ‘The Axe.’ Upon graduation, he started work for Arthur Andersen Consulting as a Systems Analyst. Some major clients included PepsiCo, Sears, and Waste Management. He lived and worked on projects in San Bernardino, Calif., Washington, D.C., and Chicago, Ill., to name a few and rose to the level of Manager at Arthur Andersen. In 1988, he moved to Fontana to make a home for his family and raise his two children. He was a Manager and Realtor at The Rauland Agency, Inc. Matt quickly became involved with the local real estate board and earned Realtor of the Year in 1992 and served as President of the Association in 1993. His community involvement included being a member of Rotary International where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, held the office of Director for a time and served a term as President. Matt was an active member of the Fontana Elementary School Board for six years and also served a term as President. In 1999, he moved to Madison to start a career with the Stark Company Realtors working on their commercial and residential developments and also serving as a branch manager. He quickly became very involved with the Realtors Association of South Central Wisconsin (RASCW), Wisconsin Realtors Association (WRA), and the National Association of Realtors (NAR). He served on several committees at all three levels, was Chairman of the Board for the WRA in 2001-02, earned numerous awards, and was a State Director for 12 years, and National Director for seven. In his free time, he loved golfing, fishing, hunting, traveling, talking politics, and spending time with his family and friends. His magnetic and fun-loving personality endeared him to many. His children were his pride and joy. Matt’s one regret was that he didn’t reach the age to be a grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of almost seven years, Sandra (Berg) Miller of Fitchburg; son, Jared, a graduate of Boston College and a Clinical Research Associate at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston; and daughter, Jordan, a sophomore at Texas Christian University in Dallas studying Film, TV & Digital Media; his parents, Dave and Joan Miller of Sanibel, Fla.; siblings, Audrey (Steve) Masimore of Hackensack, Minn., Steve (Karinne) Miller of West Des Moines, Iowa, Larry (Sharon) Miller of East Gull Lake, Minn., and Mary Ann (Joel) Goodman of Sanibel, Fla.; father and mother in-law, Rod and Donna Berg of Whitewater; and sister in-law, Brenda (Judson) Lowry of Appleton. He is further survived by several nieces and nephews who adored him.
