MATC proposal will accommodate future college growth
Madison Area Technical College administrators were rewarded for their careful planning for the future of the college with unanimous board approval to begin negotiations with developers who will turn the soon-to-be vacated downtown campus into a hotel and office building.
As you remember, the proposal was not without controversy. Some feel it is a mistake to abandon the Carroll Street campus downtown, and there were almost a dozen interested developers and five final plans from which to choose.
But like the compelling argument administrators made for leasing the in-need-of-repairs downtown facility they also chose the most fiscally responsible development plan, and if all the details can be worked out, the deal will accommodate future college growth including a needed expansion in south Madison.
The Wisconsin Technical College System Board needs to sign off and some city land use approvals are needed, but college president Jack Daniels and his team have done this the right way thus far as the current smooth sailing would attest.
