MADISON-Mary Markunas, 88, of Madison, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 11, 2014, surrounded by those who loved her.
She was born on May 13, 1926, in Madison, the daughter of Roy and Anna (Emery) Beckwith of the Greenbush neighborhood. She was married on July 28, 1945, to Alex Joseph Markunas and moved to Forest City, Pa. Mary worked as a supervisor of an ILGWU dress factory for the majority of her life. She returned to Madison in the late 1980’s. Mary was an in-home day care provider where she enjoyed taking care of many children, including many family members and she will be missed by all of them. Mary enjoyed her vegetable garden, watching Law and Order and having a ‘brandy’ with family. Most of all, Mary cherished her independence.
Mary is survived by her son, Robert (Carol) Markunas; two granddaughters, Stephanie and Christina of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and a brother Alfred, (Vivian) Beckwith of Madison. Mary had many nieces and nephews that were special in her life as well. Tammie and Laurie played an active and important role in Mary’s life for many years and were there until the end.
The family will have a private celebration of Mary’s life in the near future.
