Mary Jane Leonard
Hollandale – Mary Jane Leonard, age 85 died peacefully on August 20, 2012 at Upland Hills Nursing & Rehab Center, Dodgeville, WI. She was born August 27, 1926 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Dodgeville, WI, the daughter of Stephen and Kathryn (Steil) DeMuth. She attended Barreltown Country School, St. Mary’s Grade School, and graduated from Mineral Point High School in 1944. She also attended Milwaukee Accredited Schools of Beauty Culture for one year and then worked in beauty shops in Madison and Dodgeville. On October 1, 1946 she married Joseph G. Leonard at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mineral Point. They began their career in farming outside of Hollandale where they raised fifteen children together. Mary Jane was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hollandale, the Council of Catholic Women holding offices on the parish, deanery and diocesan level, and a supporter and volunteer for the Grandview Foundation. Mary Jane had many volunteer hours of church work and was presented with the Outstanding Service & Dedication Award in 2005. She loved following the grandchildren’s activities, traveling, reading, crocheting, sewing, her art at quilting and of course her beautiful flower beds. Her family meant so much to her.
Mary Jane is survived by her children, Mike (Cathy) Leonard, Ann (Jeff) Johnsrud, Gary (Willette) Leonard, Marian (Jim) Thompson all of Hollandale; Maureen Engelberger of Madison; Linda (Albert) Meinholz of Middleton; Randy (Jan) Leonard, Richland Center; Pat (Shelly) Leonard and Peter (Kristi) Leonard, Blanchardville; Laura Jean (Tim) Blotz, Lisa (Randy) Borne, and Mary (John) Aschliman, Dodgeville; Joan (Denny) Annen, Yakima, WA; Julie (fiance Kurt Anfinson) Thompson, Sun Prairie; and Kevin (Donna) Leonard, Mineral Point; 43 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Also two sisters, Margaret Howie, Waukesha; and Rita (Blake) Lawrence, North Freedom, WI/Arizona; and two sisters-in-law Marge DeMuth, Dodgeville and Joyce DeMuth, Sperry, OK. Also two brothers-in-law Paul Leonard, Rockford, IL and John (Agnes) Leonard, Madison, WI and a sister-in-law Angie Leonard, Highland, WI and many nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph (August 18, 1983), her parents Stephen (1992) and Kathryn (1983), her brothers James (2008) and Dan (2011), sons-in-law Bill Cleary, Don Engelberger and Jerry Thompson, a grandson Chad Cleary. brothers-in-law, Don Howie and Frank Leonard and sisters-in-law, Lillian Leonard and Ellen Leonard.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 25 at 11:00 a.m. at ST. PATRICK’S CATHOLIC CHURCH in Hollandale. Father Tom Gillespie and Father Paul DeMuth will officiate. Burial will be held in the Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 till 8:00PM on Friday, August 24 at ST. PATRICK’S CATHOLIC CHURCH and from10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. on Saturday at the church.
Memorials can be made to St. Patrick Church, Hollandale, Upland Hills Hospice or to a charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank Upland Hills Nursing & Rehab Center for the compassionate and loving care given “Mom” while a resident there, to Dr. Dunn who was always there for us and to the wonderful Hospice staff.
