Mary Ellen Ladd
Mary Ellen Ladd, age 89, of Dodgeville passed away on Friday, July 16th, 2021 at Upland Hills Health following a brief illness.
Mary Ellen was born on March 25, 1932 in Highland Township to C. Samuel and Hilda (Olson) Peterson. Mary Ellen grew up on her family’s farm and first attended school at the Old Union Valley School House. She first met Jim Ladd while both were attending school there. Mary Ellen went on to graduate from Cobb High School and worked for Thorp Finance. She married Jim Ladd of Dodgeville at Otter Creek Lutheran Church on July 12, 1953. The couple lived and began farming on Jim’s family farm where she lived her entire life.
Mary Ellen was a long-time member of Otter Creek where she was a Sunday School and Bible School Teacher and major contributor with special music and choir. She also loved volunteering at the Church Socials.
Mary Ellen was an accomplished 4-H Youth leader for many years. She also loved baking, canning, and making lefsa. She loved sharing these treats with others but also won numerous ribbons in open class at the Iowa County Fair and State Fair. Mary Ellen grew to enjoy country music and played piano much of her life. She especially loved playing old time music with relatives. With Jim, Mary Ellen had the opportunity to visit Branson and Nashville ‘s Grande Ole Opry. As a couple they always loved to dance and share favorite songs.
Most of all, Mary Ellen loved farming. She had a large garden of produce and flowers, but she always helped with farm crops and chores too. She loved the countryside and cared for the farm animals, including her chickens, cats, and dogs. The dairy farm was recognized with milk quality awards from the State of Wisconsin.
When Mary Ellen lost Jim in February 2000, she strongly wanted to be part of farming. She replaced Jim as her son’s business partner, living there until her death.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Robert and Ronnie Peterson, a sister Betty Andro, and a half-brother Steven Pelanek.
Mary Ellen is survived by her son, Eric of Dodgeville; two daughters, Ann of Prospect Heights, IL and Alice of Wray, CO three sisters, Gloria (John) Trevorrow of Palmview, TX; Dianne (Dan) Mingione of Dodgeville and Sonja (Ron) Chamberlain of Anoka, MN as well many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was the solid rock for her children throughout her lifetime: Always there, always Listening, encouraging, helping, and advising. She will be deeply missed by all those who knew her.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, July 22, 2021 at the Lulloff-Peterson-Houck Funeral Home in Dodgeville. Pastor Ramona Orton will officiate with burial in East Side Cemetery. Friends may call at funeral home on Thursday after 1:00 P.M.
