Mary Elizabeth Kirschner
Mary Elizabeth Kirschner, age 87, passed away at Maplewood Nursing Home on Thursday, August 2, 2012.
She was born in Baraboo on February 24, 1925, the daughter of the late William and Adeline (Jax) Greenhalgh. She was a graduate of Baraboo High School in 1943. She worked at Badger ordinance from 1943 – 1945. She attended U.W. Madison from 1945 – 1949 graduating with a degree in Home Economics and was a member of Alpha Xi Delta Sorority. Mrs. Kirschner taught Home Ec. at Sauk City High School from 1949 – 1952.
She was married to William E. (Bill) Kirschner on August 9, 1952 in Baraboo. From 1952 – 1958 the couple lived and worked in Madison. From 1958 – 1963 she was a homemaker in Boscobel and in 1963 they moved to Sauk City. From 1968 until 2006 Mrs. Kirschner worked at the Sauk City Library where she became the head librarian and was instrumental in the addition which was named after her. Mrs. Kirschner enjoyed playing bridge, sewing, playing piano and organ and crocheting afghans for friends and nursing home residents. She was an avid Badger and Packer fan.
She is survived by her husband, Bill; a daughter; Sandra (John) Zemke of Sheboygan; two sons ; Robert and Bruce Kirschner, both of Madison; a granddaughter, Kathryn Mary Zemke; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Karen; a sister; Janet Marberry; and three brothers, Robert, John and Arthur Greenhalgh.
A memorial service will be held at HOOVERSON FUNERAL HOME, 251 Water St., Sauk City at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 with Pastor Bill Kapp officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to service. Interment will take place later in the Sauk City Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Sauk City Library.
