Mary E. Derr
Mary E. Derr age 102, passed away on Monday, April 24, 2017 at her home.
She was born on March 12, 1915 in the Town of York to Alvin and Elsie (Johnson) Lazers.
Mary graduated from the Marshall High School in Marshall and Columbia County Normal Teachers College in Columbus. After graduation she taught at Clay Ridge Grade School. She was married to Alvin Derr on September 24, 1935 St. Mary of the Nativity Catholic Church in Marshall. Together they operated a dairy farm and raised three children. She was a 4-H leader and pioneered the hot lunch program at St. Joseph’s Church where she was an active member. For more than 30 years they lived in Texas where she volunteered her time and cooking talents.
Mary was president of the Women’s Catholic Order of Foresters and member of Christian Mothers and the Homemakers club. She worked seasonally at the Wisconsin Cheeseman in Sun Prairie.
Survivors include two daughters, Dolores (Ruben) Christian of Columbus and Karen (Richard) Newel of Sun Prairie; one son Bob (Diane) of Marshall; AFS daughter Leda Cortez Masis of Costa Rica; seven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; one brother Jim Lazers of Packwaukee; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2008; two brothers and sisters-in-law Alvin “Bud” and Loretta Lazers, Robert and Beverly Lazers; one sister and brother-in-law Genevieve and Cyril Derr; sister-in-law Marilyn Lazers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 A.M., with visitation beginning at 10:00 A.M., on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH in East Bristol. Rev. Vince Brewer will officiate. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
