Martin D. Verhelst

Martin D. Verhelst

Martin D. Verhelst, the owner of Verhelst CPA, S.C. located in Oregon, Wis., passed away on March 17, 2017. Marty was born in Sheboygan, Wis., on July 25, 1949, to Lester and Elizabeth Verhelst. Marty was a Certified Public Accountant and Personal Financial Specialist with over forty years in the business. Marty graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1972.

He began his accounting career in Milwaukee with Arthur Anderson, however his strong connection to Madison brought him back to the area where he continued his career as Controller for Memorial Union, then the Secretary/Treasurer and Controller of Wisco Industries. Marty’s passion was in public accounting and in 1988 began his practice as a sole-practitioner. Since then, he has devoted his life to working with small business and professional clients. His wife, Debbi, has worked with him since January 1990, starting from the basement of their home. In 2013, Marty incorporated his accounting practice with longtime business partner Richard Reale II. He has been a member of the WICPA since 1975, serving on the board as a vice-president from 1989 thru 1991. He has served as an active member of WICPA task forces and committees, most recently as a member of the Accounting, Auditing and Financial Management Conference task force and Public Policy Committee chairperson. As chairperson he has represented the WICPA at many political fund raisers and made numerous legislative contacts. Marty was the incoming president of the WICPA for 2015 but was unable to fulfill due to illness.

Marty genuinely cared about everyone he met and that sentiment was clearly conveyed each time he interacted with them. His family always joked that he could talk about anything and everything with anyone and everyone. Marty regarded everyone as his friend. He took pride in his practice, was a perfectionist in his work, and touted that he would never retire. Marty’s favorite passion outside of work was attending University of Wisconsin and Green Bay Packer sporting events with children and grandchildren.

Marty is survived by his wife, Debbi; children, Jami St. Clair (fiance Robin Ringhand), Andrew (Janice) Verhelst and Nicole (Kyle) Dragone; brother, Jack Verhelst (significant other, Cheri Curtiss); six grandchildren, Madelynn, Devon, Sophia, Olivia, Zoey, Aubree, and granddog, Raji; many other relatives and close friends. In addition to his parents, Lester and Elizabeth, he was preceded in death by granddog, Chester; father-in-law, Sylvester (Bob) Burke and mother-in-law, Beatrice Burke. In honor of Marty’s favorite pastimes, we encourage you to attend the funeral service in your favorite Badgers or Packers apparel. Special thank you to staff at Sienna Meadows Memory Care for all their loving care.
