Marilynn Christine (Hagen) Suter

MADISON-Marilynn Christine (Hagen) Suter, age 81, passed away on Monday, Aug. 7, 2017, at Agrace HospiceCare.

She was born on Oct. 28, 1935 in Amery, Wis., to Sanford and Alma (Olson) Hagen. The fifth of eight children, Marilynn grew up on the east side of Madison and graduated from Madison East High School. She met the love of her life, Jerome (Jerry, “Romie”) Suter, when they were high school seniors. They married at 19 years old, on Aug. 6, 1955 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Shortly after, Jerome enlisted in the U.S. Army and they moved to North Carolina. They returned to Madison and when their family was complete, they built their home in the Orchard Ridge neighborhood and lived there for 56 years. The perfect vacation for Marilynn was always a trip to the Northwoods. From the time, she was a young girl until just a year ago, she would visit the family cottage property on Long Lake. Many long summer days were spent with a multitude of friends and family members fishing, boating, grilling and soaking up the sunshine. Marilynn was a wonderful mother and grandmother who enjoyed growing her own vegetables and tending to her flower gardens. She delighted many family members, friends and neighbors with her canned peaches, pears and applesauce.

Grandma “Mare” and Grandpa “Romie” had a fall ritual of driving to Richland Center in search of the most flavorful Macintosh apples. For the next three days, they would be busy making applesauce and filling the freezer with apple pies. A special gift from grandma was always a jar of applesauce with a $5 bill taped to the side. She took pride in her Norwegian heritage and enjoyed making lefse. Marilynn was always happy to pass down her lefse-making knowledge to anyone who wanted to learn.

Marilynn leaves behind her sons, Thomas Suter and Michael (Lisa) Suter; grandsons, Mitchell and Andrew Suter; three siblings, Richard (Sue) Hagen, Patsy Papcke and Betty Hagen; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Marilynn was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Ella Volk, Ardys Bergman, June Trapino; brother, Ronald “Sonny” Hagen; and most recently, her husband, Jerome, on May 14, 2017.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be gifted in Marilynn’s name to the Agrace Foundation, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711 or at
