Margaret Mary Thornsen, age 92, passed away at her home in Westshire Village on December 29, 2014. She was born on April 16, 1922, the daughter of Frank and Cecilia (Griffin) Freidel. Following graduation from Marshall High School, she worked at telephone companies in Madison and Baraboo. She married Earl R. Thornsen in Marshall on June 18, 1946 and they were married until his death in 2008.

For twelve years they operated a dairy farm located between Marshall and Waterloo. After moving to Madison, Margaret worked as a telephone operator at the University of Wisconsin’s telephone office. She loved playing cards with her relatives and friends, vegetable and flower gardening, going to plays, especially at the Fireside Theatre and St. Bernard Players, and watching her grandchildren’s sporting events, recitals, plays and concerts.

Margaret is survived by her children, Carol Reynolds, Jerry (JoAnn) Thornsen, and Larry (Nancy) Thornsen; her grandchildren, Robert Reynolds, Mickey (Tara) Reynolds, Jessica (Eric) Showers, Aaron (Nikki) Thornsen, Margaret and Michael Thornsen; seven great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary Thornsen; a brother-in-law, Linus Thornsen; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl; sons, Tom and Mike “Moose” Thornsen; brothers, Francis (Lucille) Freidel, Jerry (Dot) Freidel, and Cyril Freidel; a son-in-law, Jim Reynolds; brothers-in-law, Bernard, Rob (Judy) and Larry Thornsen; and a sister-in-law, Caroline (Barney) Kobleska.

The family would like to thank Margaret’s friends at Westshire Village for their close friendship and for taking such good care of her in her later years.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or St. Vincent de Paul, two of Margaret’s favorite charities, or a charity of your choice.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 5, 2014, at ST. MARY OF THE LAKE CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5460 Mary Lake Road, Westport, with Fr. Jim Leeser presiding. Burial will follow at St. Marys Catholic Cemetery in Marshall. A visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, January 4, 2014, at RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 2418 N. Sherman Avenue and also at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass.
