Madison-Margaret K. “Maggie Olson” Schmale, age 93, passed away on February 26, 2014 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on January 25, 1921 in Madison, the daughter of Ole H. Olson (born in Norway) and Clara Emily (Clough) Olson. Margaret was married to Arnold I. Schmale on January 22, 1944. He preceded her in death on March 30, 1992.

She was employed with the State of Wisconsin, Demographic and Special Analysis, retiring in 1986. Margaret was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, giving much of her time to the Church. Margaret loved to travel and found joy in spending as much time as possible with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed many social activities with her family and friends. She was an accomplished bowler, belonging to the 600 Club. She was an avid sports enthusiast, of the Green Bay Packers, the UW Football team, and the UW Hockey team which she and her family had season hockey tickets for 27 years and also supported the UW Hockey Blue Line Club. Maggie was an avid quilter, making king sized quilts for each of her children who will have many joyful memories of her creations. She was dedicated to her family. In her younger years, she was chosen to be one of the “Angels” in the well known State Capitol Christmas Pageant. Upon her retirement from the State of Wisconsin, she received the “Governor Special Award” for dedicated service.

Survivors include her son Gregory Schmale, her daughter Cynthia Schmale, and Debra (Paul) Burkhardt; precious twin grandchildren Ashley Ann Burkhardt, and Paul David Burkhardt Jr.; all of Madison. In addition to her deceased husband Arnold, and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Russell, Roland, and Udele Olson, seven sisters, Una, Mabel, Marion, and Dorothy Olson, Clara L. Herbert, Eldora Geier, and Angeline Maloney. Out of State relatives include niece Armella Geier (Missouri), and brother-in-law Fred Herbert and nephew David (Carol) Herbert (Pennsylvania).

You are deeply loved and will be greatly missed by many of those whose lives you have richly touched.

A special thanks to Dr. Kostelyna and Irene, 5th floor at St. Mary’s Hospital, Agrace HospiceCare, and St. Mary’s Care Center for all their care. You were a terrific mom and grandmother and are now a special angel. We love you!

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 1, 2014, at JOYCE-RYAN FUNERAL HOME, 5701 Odana Road, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 10:00 until the time of service. Burial will follow at Forest Hill Cemetery.
