Man selling iPhone left with envelope of fake $20 bills, police say
MADISON, Wis. —
A man selling a smartphone via the Letgo app was scammed out of almost $900 after he met the buyer at a Madison gas station, police said.
The 24-year-old was selling an iPhone X on the Letgo app, and arranged to meet a prospective buyer at the Kwik Trip at 1625 N. Stoughton Road Tuesday afternoon to make the sale, according to a release.
The 24-year-old told police he arranged to sell the iPhone for $860, and the buyer handed him an envelope filled with cash.
After the buyer left, the 24-year-old realized all of the bills in the envelope were fake, according to the release.
Police said there were 23 fake $20 bills with the serial number MG 25812709F and another 20 with the serial number MG 25812710F.
