A 22-year-old man pulled a knife during a fight in downtown Madison Friday night, police said.

The Madison Police Department said officers responded to a report at 9:25 p.m. of a fight in the 600 block of State Street.

According to the report, a 21-year-old woman confronted a man for leaving empty bottles of cough syrup in an area where a group of homeless people sleep. She says he was told to knock it off and leave because he might jeopardize their ability to stay if they don’t keep the area clean.

Witnesses told police things escalated with the 22-year-old punching a 21-year-old man before cutting the woman. Another man told police he threw a skateboard at the attacker, knocking him to the ground, as the armed man advanced on him.

The injured woman told police she tried to use a cellphone to call police, but the man broke it. She then ran to a nearby business to call for help.

Officers later found and arrested Mark A. Figueroa on suspicion of substantial battery, disorderly conduct while armed and damage to property.
