Man loses $5,500 in IRS phone scam, police say
MADISON, Wis. — A 34-year-old Madison man lost $5,500 to a scam call from someone claiming to work for the IRS.
Madison police said the man got a call from the fake IRS employee saying that he owed back taxes and would be arrested by “Officer Smith from Madison police” if he didn’t do what he was told.
The victim withdrew money over several hours from various accounts and purchased iTunes gift cards from several west side businesses and gave the card numbers to the callers. He eventually realized he was being scammed, police said.
